Tip for Week 9/14/09

The user interface, and many variables that are used on a daily basis, reside in two places, the profiles tab in the Options dialogue box and in workspaces. Best practice is to create and set a unique user profile and workspace for later use or to restore your settings.  This week we'll discuss creating the profile.

Right-click on the command line and pick OPTIONS.  Select the Profiles tab and pick the add to list button on the right side of the dialogue box.  Create a unique profile name that doesn't contain any spaces or illegal DOS characters.  The Description area is optional, but you can have spaces and characters in this area.  Now, pick the apply & close button to create the new profile.  Next, highlight the new profile and pick the Set Current button.  Any changes you make in the other tabs of this profile will be saved  All your menus, toolbars, and position of the command line will also be saved.

Another good practice is to export this profile to your My Documents folder so that it will be backed up and saved.  These settings can then be restored, using the Import button in the profiles tab, if you ever reinstall the application and want to quickly restore all your settings and interface.
