Here's a quick tip for closing the Properties palette quickly.

Right-clicking anywhere in the Properties palette will invoke a pop-up menu.  All the pop-ups contain a CLOSE option at the top of the list.  This becomes quite handy when you change a setting in one of the edit boxes and then simply right-click and close without moving the mouse to find the X or using Ctrl+1 to toggle the palette off.
