The trim and extend commands have been around for a long time in AutoCAD.  The 2006 release has added several new command line options that were not available in earlier releases.  The Fence and Crossing options now appear as options for completing the trimming or extending.  Fence could always be invoked by typing F at the command line after selecting the initial edges.  The ability to use a crossing window is unique to only the newer version.
