Tip for Week 11/17/03

Sometimes we don't have much choice over how deep the directory tree gets to save our files. I call it fighting the tree because there are a few directories of mine that are just buried and need ten clicks to find just the directory let alone the file itself. The AutoCAD 2002 and higher offers another solution for this scenario that is very convenient.

The answer lies in the Places area of the Select File dialogue box. This area contains several icons by default, History, My Documents, Favorites, Desktop, Buzzsaw, Point A, and FTP. All of these shortcuts, except the Buzzsaw and Point A icons in AutoCAD 2002 products, can be deleted by right-clicking on them and picking Remove from the options. in AutoCAD 2004 based products, you can delete them all!  An additional option on the right click menu allows the user to restore the original set of icons if need be.  You can also add your own shortcut to this area of any folder highlighted in the dialogue box! That's right ladies and gentleman you can now customize the Select file dialogue box to have it your way when it comes to shortcuts for YOUR folders!
