The best thing about icons is that you can double click on them and programs start up.  A very nice feature in AutoCAD 2000i based software and higher is that you can double click on any object and it's associated editing command or the Properties dialogue box will initiate. This saves so much time in not having to type a whole bunch of long command names to edit things  that you'll be able to afford an extra coffee break every day!
