Tip for Week 3/27/06

The help dialogue box is an extremely useful tool.  This week, a couple of nuances to using this robust information tool.

If a command is active, pressing the F1 key will open the Help box to the command that is active.  If you look in the upper right hand corner, you will see an arrow pointing up.  Picking this arrow will change the page to the alphabetical list of commands, starting with the same first letter of your current command.  This arrow only appears if you are down one level or more in the hierarchy of the help information.  It's just one more guidance tool for help.

If you've had one of those stressful days where you are using the help dialogue box a lot, typically when upgrading to a new version, you can review the individual help files that you visited by opening a Windows Explorer window, and under the View pull-down menu, go to the Explorer Bar cascade, and then pick History. The History window can also be opened or toggled using the CTRL+H keyboard shortcut.  Look for the Today folder, then expand My Computer.  Voila!  All the help file areas you had been visiting all day.  Go ahead and double click on any that need to be reviewed a final time.  These are typically HTML files that are compressed into the main CHM file.

You can also add any help file to the Favorites area of the help dialogue box when in AutoCAD also.
