What do the Insert Units do in the
Units dialogue box? I've seen this setting for years now, but I never
knew what it was for.
Well, for starters, when everyone switches to AutoCAD 2006 products, this
setting will effect how entity scaling is determined from one drawing to the
other. Blocks, files, and Xref's will scale, by the correct conversion
factor, from one set of units to the other. Ensure that all of your
blocks, within drawings, have insert units set to INCHES. Also make
sure that all of your files have the INSUNITS variable set to INCHES!
This can be done in the Units dialogue box. Most of our files are OK,
but there will be a few out there that will require a lot of re-defining.
I want to bring this up NOW, so
that the problem will not be too bad for us all in the future.
Here's an example of what's about to happen to our files with the next
release of AutoCAD products:
If you set the insertion units, in
the Units dialogue box, to feet in the first drawing, and then try to insert
that file as a block or Xref in a second file, that has the insertion units
set to inches, the entities will be automatically scaled twelve times!
Yipes! Neither the Xref dialogue box, nor the Insert dialogue box will
allow you to change this setting. You will have to manually scale the
objects in the scaling area and pick the checkmark for uniform scaling.
If you do not use the uniform scaling option, Refedit will not work on the
entities without the "non-uniformly scaled block" error occurring.
