Tip for Week 5/30/05

Most drawing files that have been around your plant for a while, and has been updated by multiple users, usually contain excessive amounts of unused entities like blocks and layers.  Go ahead and use the PostalCAD PurgeAll command by typing PG at the command line.  This will vaporize all those unnecessary items that make your file balloon in size.  The PostalCAD utility will initiate the AutoCAD Purge command with an All option, five times, to ensure there are no entities left un-purged.  The command line will show the history of this action after it occurs.

A typical workroom floor drawing should be no bigger than 1.5 Mb, after purging. If you have TMS or an APPS unit, the file size will be a bit larger.  3D work will absolutely be larger in size by a factor of five or more.

Also beware of manufacturers drawings being inserted into the drawing file.  This would definitely be classified as excessive geometry and should be re-drawn to show only the basic shapes, not every little nut and bolt.
