Tip for Week 01/19/04

Password protected?  You've got to be kidding me!
Having been a manager in a drafting department for seven years, I can absolutely, emphatically, with no reserve say, NO WAY!

Scenario #1...
Employee calls in sick...8:30am (half hour late)...
International client coming at 11:00am...
Team worked all weekend to meet deadline...
File to be printed for meeting is password protected...(boss doesn't know)...
Boss goes to network folder and tries to open file to print final version for meeting...
Boss now needs password or a CRAY computer running non-stop for 15 to 30 years to break password protection....
Boss calls employee who is on the way to doctors appointment...(listens to ringing signal as heartbeat increases)...
boss needs to be very creative very quickly...

Scenario # 2...
Employee works late, password protects file...
Employee meets untimely death...Rare, but possible...

Scenario #3...
Employee gets peeved at company and boss...
Password protects all CAD files...
Employee quits...Deadlines don't...

I don't need to go on and on, now do I.  Unless you really need to password protect files, go ahead and uninstall the password protection security features in AutoCAD 2004 based products by one of two ways.

1.  When installing your AutoCAD 2004 based product, use the custom option for what options to install and make sure the Drawing Encryption check box is NOT checked.

2.  If a 2004 product is already installed with the password protection, insert the installation CD and pick the add or remove features option when the install window opens and uncheck the Drawing Encryption check box.
