For those users who have ever
driven a 1963 Corvette split window coupe a simple dialogue box in AutoCAD
can replicate the look through the back window of this magnificent vehicle.
Those users who just want to split their screen into multiple viewports in
Model space, read along.
At the command line type in Viewports. The Viewports dialogue box will
appear and ensure that the New Viewports tab is current. Choose the
"Four: right" option at the right. The Corvette drivers would use the
"Two: Vertical" option. The "Four: right" option will divide
your Model space tab into four divisions, one large viewport on the left,
and three smaller viewports on the right. Hence the "right" listing
from the left pane. These tiled viewports can only fill up the entire
screen and be in a rectilinear shape. Paperspace Viewports are
similar, but they are what's known as "floating". These viewports can
"float" anywhere on the screen and be any size. The Modelspace
viewports are activated in the same fashion as Paperspace viewports.
Simply click once inside the viewport to activate and begin your work.
Commands can be started in one viewport and finished in others. This
feature is why you would make use of this feature. 3D users love this
function so that they can see the overall model in one viewport and a few
details in the others while working in the big viewport. The
configuration can be saved to recall the setup later. Return to the
Viewports dialogue box and use the "Single" option to return your screen to
normal operating format. Don't forget to investigate the other options
for 3D work and applying other options to individual viewports.
By the way, those of you who are counting how many times the word viewport
or viewports is in this article, it's nineteen.
Viewports, twenty.
