Tip for Week 10/13/03

Have you ever needed to place a hatch pattern to reflect the true placement of how the pattern looks like in real life?

The accurate placement of hatch patterns is really quite simple.  Make sure that your USC (User Coordinate System) is set to World if you are drawing in 2D.  Now simply change the UCS origin to where the hatch pattern should originate from.  Use the UCSICON command and pick the ORigin option to type in coordinates or pick the origin with your mouse.

A graphic way to see this is to draw a rectangle and set the UCS origin to the lower left corner of the rectangle.  Start up the Hatch command using ANSI37 as the pattern with an angle of 45.  Pick the rectangle as the Selected Objects and then OK.  The rectangle is now hatched with the first lower left square aligned with the horizontal and vertical lines of the rectangle.  Zoom into the lower left corner of the rectangle to show only four full squares.  Now move the UCS origin up and to the right of the corner, near the middle of the first square and hatch again.  The origin of the hatch now matches the UCS origin. If you have multiple hatches that need accurate placement, just continue moving the UCS origin as needed.

By using the first rectangle method, you can determine what the origin point is graphically  for any hatch pattern.  You can then apply the hatch accurately for your application.
