This week's tip is for the advanced 3D
users. The 3 point option for setting the
UCS is an overlooked option that is actually quite
useful when creating a new
UCS. The option works very much like
a typical command line sequence familiar to all AutoCAD users.
Base point and then direction.
In this example, you will
pick a relative base point and then
pick two directions, the X and then the Y
from the first base point. A logical screen
setup begins with the UCS base point located in the lower left corner of the
screen and extending to the right is the positive X coordinates. The
positive Y coordinates would be extending up from the lower left corner.
This typical orientation will need a little setup to be done with the
current view first. Orient your view to have this origin, X, and Y
relationship setup before you begin.
The first pick will be somewhere in
the lower left corner of the screen, at the new base point. The second
pick would be to establish the positive X direction, so the pick would be
somewhere in the lower right corner of the screen. The third pick is
to establish the positive Y axis and the pick for that would be somewhere in
the upper left quadrant of the screen. Once you get use to the
sequence of this option, a new UCS origin can be established very quickly.
It also is helpful to default the UCS icon
to snap to the Origin point under the UCSICON options.
This will greatly enhance the comprehension
of this command.
