Tip for Week 3/31/03

Have you ever looked at all of your system variables in one place?  Probably not.  some people type in SETVAR at the command prompt, enter ?, then enter * to see them all, one by one, at the command prompt.  Unfortunately you still can't change the variables until you type in the needed variable afterwards at a blank command prompt.  Some users will go to the HELP files to understand what each system variable will do.

Believe it or not there actually is a very good dialogue box utility for changing these variables.  You won't find this one in the menu pull downs anywhere. Just type SYSVDLG at the command prompt and shazam!  The magical dialogue box appears.  This utility allows you to look at, read, change, or even save the master list of system variables for later. That's right, you can save your current system variables to a *.svf file and restore them on another machine (after saving the original!) or on a new installation.  The utility is also invaluable when you can't remember the name of a system variable that you need to look up quickly.  This utility is available on basic installations of AutoCAD 2000 and up.
