Tip for Week 3/24/03

Do you spend a lot of time panning around a drawing?
Sometimes it feels like you're rowing a boat doesn't it?
Well, to lesson the amount of strokes it takes to get that special view just right, let's explore all the Pan options that are available in AutoCAD.

If you go to the VIEW>PAN> listing from your AutoCAD pull-down menu, you'll see that the PAN command has six options.  The first option listed, REALTIME, is the same as what occurs when you use the PAN tool icon or if you just enter PAN at the command line.  This option let's you dynamically and without any constraints, pan around your drawing as needed. The other options available are the POINT, LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN listings.  These have restrictions which are self evident by their titles.  The LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN options are noteworthy because they shift the display a pre-set distance orthographically only.

The hidden trick is that if you hold down the SHIFT key, the current PAN command will only move the view in an orthographic direction, even in REALTIME mode!  It's the same as choosing the LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN options without having to dig through the menu pull-downs.  For those of you 3D users who choose to leave SHADEMODE on, the shift key does nothing when using the PAN command.  This trick will always work in Paperspace, regardless of the SHADEMODE setting.
